BLACK SABBATH ON iTUNES: British musicians Ozzy Osbourne, left to right, Tony. Albums like “Paranoid,” “Master Of Reality” and “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath”.

Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Album

As promised, since the Vol. 4 thread has wrapped up, I thought we'd start a song by song for the follow up of that album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath which was released in 1973. If you care to, please share what got you into this album and what your initial thoughts of it were. As with all song by song threads, please stick to the song at hand and don't jump forward ahead of me. With that said, I'll add a bit of introduction to the album and some background of the recording of it.Background:Taking its title from John Schlesinger's 1971 movie, 'Sunday, Bloody Sunday' and a headline from Melody Maker magazine retaliatory article about the band that read 'Bloody Hell, Bloody Sabbath', Black Sabbath fused the two titles and named their 1973 album, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which is regarded, by most, as their finest record as an outfit. Recorded in September of 1973 in Morgan Studios, London, after a failed attempt to recreate the vibe and energy in Los Angeles, California, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath finds the Birmingham quartet at their most creative, fluid, and playful, compositionally. Produced by the band themselves, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was well received by the critics of the time (almost a first for the band) and fans alike.

It is, indeed, Black Sabbath at the pinnacle of their success and inventiveness.Looking at the cover of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, a few things immediately stand out for me. Firstly, I've always got a bit of a Emerson, Lake, and Palmer 'Lucky Man' vibe from the back cover with an adoring family looking on at a man who is on his death bed after a life of good fortune and admirable deeds. Shielding by the arms of an angel (or God), and protected by two statutes of lions at the foot of his bed, his family hold a vigil at, what we can surmise, are his final hours.

It is a comforting image as opposed to the front, which depicts, perhaps, the same man besieged by demons after living a life of sin and wantonness. With the devil extending his arms around the bed, and the number of the beast (666) embedded on the headboard of the bed, it is a disturbing image that is not easily forgotten. With black, green, and reds, Drew Struzan's artwork is compelling and coupled with the 'S's in Sabbath resembling that of the Nazi SS, it leaves a lasting impression upon the viewer. In my opinion, it's one of Black Sabbath's best album covers in that it conveys almost perfectly what is contained in the album itself: songs of light and shade; of malevolence and beauty. Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath is a natural transition from the critical successes of Vol. 4 and musically, is the band's most ambitious offering yet.

The title track kicks everything off quite nicely with a very bitter, harsh Iommi riff and Ozzy's venomous vocal cutting through the air of its incredible energy. I like the contrast of the numbers' arrangement with the softer section set against the crushing main theme and it appears that the band has offered, yet again, another defining Sabbath classic. The outro groove is rather stony and sludgy as only Sabbath could offer and I like the fact that it picks up the tempo during the numbers' fade out.

10 out of 10 or an A+ rating. It's a great start to this refined and innovative release. Sabbath Bloody SabbathGood Christ, this is song brings the fire and it brings hell with it.Easily one of my favorite Sabbath tunes. That riff. Feels like it burns itself right into your DNA on first listen.Ozzy sings his ever-lovin' ass off.

In my top 10, Ozzy vocals ever - he has some classic 'YEAHS' in here - some enterprising music nerd should make a loop of all the 'YEAHS' Ozzy has blurted out on the classic eight. He wrung an awful lot out of that word. The bridge - or outro or coda - or whatever you want to call it.

Just all hell is threatening to break loose and it sounds like the guys are trying to keep it together of simply implode or something - the tension. One of downest and dirtiest of sections in their catalog. In 1973, Drew Struzan was a 27-year-old illustrator and the sole artist for the Pacific Eye & Ear agency on La Cienega Boulevard in Hollywood.

He cranked out artwork on deadline in an office amidst a few salespeople and an accountant. He received a simple request for a Black Sabbath album cover: draw a picture of a dying man. Struzan realized he might be able to make it into something more: what if the front image depicted an evil man dying and the back depicted a good man’s last moments? The resulting images, drawn with colored pencils on a white illustration board with guidance from creative director Ernie Cefalu, are the iconic album art of Black Sabbath’s fifth record Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. The illustrations— one on the front cover and one on the back — have been seen around the world on posters, tee-shirts, stickers, patches and tattoos. While the artwork perfectly encapsulates the essence of Black Sabbath – malevolence at war with man’s angelic nature — Struzan didn’t hear the record until it was played in his design shop after he finished the project. The fact that the images mesh effortlessly with Sabbath’s music was serendipitous. As an embryonic.

Sabbath fan, with only We Sold Our Souls and Heaven and Hell in my collection, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath was one of the first tracks I was familiar with and it'd definitely one of the greatest to me, great riffs and lyrics and the best part is the contrast between the heavy and acoustic parts.I reckon I got the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath album in 1981, similar to Vol 4, I got 2 second hand copies in quick succession, the second when I was delighted to find it was available with the lyric sleeve. I've been listening to it ever since, probably more than any of the others, Sabotage being a close second.

The band have since experienced multiple line-up changes, with guitarist Iommi being the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed in 1968 as a blues rock band, the group soon adopted the Black Sabbath moniker and began incorporating occult themes with horror-inspired lyrics and tuned-down guitars. Despite an association with these two themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, the dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war.Osbourne’s regular abuse of drugs and alcohol led to his dismissal from the band in 1979. He was replaced by former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio.

Following two albums with Dio, Black Sabbath endured countless personnel changes in the 1980s and 1990s that included vocalists Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes, Ray Gillen and Tony Martin, as well as several drummers and bassists. In 1992, Iommi and Butler rejoined Dio and drummer Vinny Appice to record Dehumanizer. The original line-up reunited with Osbourne in 1997 and released a live album Reunion. Black Sabbath’s 19th studio album, 13, which features all of the original members but Ward, was released in June 2013.Black Sabbath are often cited as pioneers of heavy metal music. The band helped define the genre with releases such as Black Sabbath (1970), Paranoid (1970) and Master of Reality (1971). They were ranked by MTV as the “Greatest Metal Band” of all time, and placed second in VH1’s “100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock” list.

Rolling Stone magazine ranked them number 85 in their “100 Greatest Artists of All Time”. They have sold over 70 million records worldwide. Black Sabbath were inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. They have also won two Grammy Awards for Best Metal Performance.
